Who
This Social Justice Organization is a national education organization that aims to end bullying, discrimination, and prejudice based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Through national chapters, they prompt LGBTQ cultural inclusion and awareness in K-12 schools.
As an organization that is known for taking bold actions to drive inclusivity at schools, this Social Justice Organization’s website was not visually interesting or showcasing the work they do for minority students in a usable way.
We created a digital ecosystem that matched their energy, commitment, and value by showcasing best-in-class aesthetics, well-organized and searchable content, mobile optimization, and easy maintenance on the backend.
Designing a Platform to Promote Inclusivity in Schools
The new website is more usable, accessible, intuitive, and informative, with a focus on easily finding information, fostering engagement, encouraging grassroots advocacy, and taking action.
First, we worked with stakeholders and conducted an in-depth audience analysis of target users.
We identified the primary and secondary website actions for our five key audience types to build a more successful navigation. Combining search filters with Drupal’s ability to score content delivers more accurate and relevant search results.
With over 60% of SJO’s website visitors using mobile devices, responsive design was key to building a seamless web experience from any device.
The Drupal Migration
We migrated SJO from Drupal 7 to take advantage of Drupal 8's powerful configuration management framework and strong emphasis on editorial UX.
SJO’s site takes a modular approach to page authoring, which ensures the design is dynamic rather than uniform from page to page. This provides a library of designed UI components — such as sliders, media objects, and paragraph text — which can be easily composed by the editor into more complex pages.
The edit page is thoughtfully configured for each content type to maximize intuitiveness and clarity. Grouping related fields, UI widgets, and tool tips and tours increase usability.
Additionally, improved back-end administration (including customizations, like workflow queues, pre-filtered lists of site content, and custom displays,) enables internal users to easily edit and update content.
